FreekNation is a place where you will find some of the biggest names in gaming. From pro teams, to some of the biggest YouTubers, we are happy to host and sponsor some of the most talented gamers and content creators out there! KontrolFreek fans know that we strive for the best, and with that in mind, we are happy to announce the newest addition to FreekNation, SoaR Gaming! While they need no introduction, we wanted to take this chance to highlight SoaR Gaming, and why we are so excited to work with them!
Established in 2011, SoaR Gaming has grown into one of the largest gaming organizations in the world. With roots going back to their Call of Duty trickshotting videos, they burst into the pro gaming scene in 2013 and haven’t stopped since. With a history of competition in games like Call of Duty, Halo, Smite, and Counter Strike: Global Offensive, it’s hard to look anywhere in the pro gaming scene and not see the name SoaR. Not only do they compete in the competitive world of esports, but Soar Gaming continues to publish amazing content on their YouTube channel regularly. To get to know SoaR Gaming a little better, we asked Jason “General” Wilhelm a few questions to see what makes him tick.
Q: Is there a story behind the name Soar?
A: I think the name SoaR derived from the trickshotting aspect. We started out as a trickshot team and I think it just looked cool.
Q: Can you give us a brief history of Soar gaming? Where you started vs where you are now?
A: SoaR Gaming was established in early 2011 at the peak of MW2. Since then we have expanded into more than just montages. We still have players who try to hit clips but we also have pro players and content creators.
Q: When did you decide to make the jump from a YouTube team to esports team? Was there a specific moment or was it something that happened slowly?
A: We saw just how big our following was compared to these other esports teams and saw the potential we had if we did it right. It slowly happened over time but 2016 was the year where we really worked on expanding the team.
Q: Do you have a favorite moment in esports?
A: Our favourite moment would probably being televised on the CW Network for the Fight for the Crown tournament. It was a real eye opener for the potential for the whole esports scene in general.
Q: You play a lot of different games on your channel, so what are a few of your favorite games to play right now?
A: My favorite game at the moment would probably be Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare. I enjoy the fast pace action of the game, and I love getting nukes on the other team.
Q: What are some of your most anticipated games for 2017?
A: Definitely Call of Duty: WW2. This is the first time in 3 years where we have a Call of Duty that is boots on the ground. As a team that grew with the older Call of dutys, we couldn’t be more excited for what this game will bring.
Q: What advice might you have for someone who wants to start their own YouTube channel or turn gaming into a career?
A: My biggest advice would be that you need to have the drive and mindset to want to become better. Never settle, always work to grow and expand your mindset. Whether that be editing videos or improving your game, always be ready to put in the work.
Q: What’s your ideal KontrolFreek setup?
A: I’ve always rocked the one thumbstick on the right. Ever since I switched back in 2011, I’ve never gone back.
