My Extra Life Story
Hey FreekNation,
So I’m going to do something a little different (write in the first person!) with this post and tell you about my personal experience with Extra Life. Since 2008, Extra Life has been bringing gamers together to work toward the goal of raising money for the Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals. To date, the collection of gamers that take part in Extra Life have raised over $30 million dollars to help sick kids. This will be the 3rd year that KontrolFreek has participated in Extra Life and the 3rd time I’ve been fortunate enough to be a part of it. Every fall I look forward to seeing FreekNation come together to make a difference in the lives of the kids that need it most.
Year 1
The first year we did Extra Life was a bit of a comedy of errors, but we all worked together and managed to put together a successful 24 hour stream. We had a few technical issues, but our audience stayed with us and kept supporting us from sun up to sun down…and back to sun up. We played a decent amount of Black Ops 3 and Borderlands: The Pre-sequel where we discovered that our graphic designer and technical guru, Carlos, had a very hard time staying on the map in any game we played and was killed by falling more often than other players. Thus one of our Extra Life staple phrases was born, “Carlos off tha map!” We had a little fun with the audience had them vote on which of the hosts they wanted to make suffer through a dry spoonful of G-Fuel, and that’s how my mouth ended up tasting like sour apple for the rest of the stream. Appreciate that, guys. We had some great conversations both in the office and with the audience in our Twitch stream, and made some friends that would come back to watch us the following year for 2016.
Year 2
Armed with a little more know-how and technical experience from the first Extra Life, year 2 of Extra Life with KontrolFreek certainly had some more polish than our first attempt. Bringing back the original cast of hosts from year one, Carlos, Connie, and myself, we were joined by some new members of the KontrolFreek team and other friends and family. We had a special guest appearance by Team Kaliber’s own KOSDFF. We continued a few shenanigans from the previous year with Carlos continuing his battle against gravity and with me, yet again, being forced eat a spoonful of G-Fuel. We managed to raise over double the amount during the stream from our first year, so we are very excited and optimistic going into our 3rd year!
Year 3
This year’s Extra Life is going to be a little different from our first 2. Due to some scheduling constraints, the KontrolFreek team will be streaming for 24 hours on Saturday, October 28th. We will still be streaming from 8 am to 8 pm est, but we will have some special Halloween themes running this year as well. We’ve got more partners and prizing than ever, and we are looking forward to making this year our biggest Extra Life ever! We hope you join us this year and we welcome you to create your own Extra Life account and join our team! Make a donation to Extra Life today, and make sure you encourage your friends and family to do the same. We will see you on the 28th for our live stream and hope you will join us!
